Preliminary number of livestock in Mongolia reaches 64.7 million

AKIPRESS.COM - The number of livestock in Mongolia reached 64.7 million at the end of 2023, down by 9.1% from the previous year, the country's National Statistics Office (NSO) reported.

The number of sheep decreased by 3.3 million (10.2%) compared to last year, goats by 3 million (10.7%), cows by 164,300 (3.0%), horses by 6,900 (0.1%) and camels by 3,400 (0.7%).

In addition, the number of households with livestock amounted to 247,800, which decreased by 500 compared to the previous year.

The total number of horses in 2023 was 4.8 million or 7.5%, cows - 5.3 million or 8.3%, camels - 473,900 or 0.7%, sheep - 29.4 million or 45.5%, goats 24.6 million or 38.1%.

According to preliminary results of the livestock census, Arkhangai province has the largest number of horses and cows, Khuvsgul province of sheep, Omnogovi province of camels, and Bayankhongor province of goats.

The five provinces with the largest number of livestock are headed by Khuvsgol province, which has 5.7 million heads of livestock, followed by Tuv province with 4.9 million heads of livestock, Arkhangai province with 4.8 million heads of livestock, and Uvurkhangai province with 4.7 million heads of livestock.

The number of livestock in the provinces of Orkhon, Dundgovi, Uvurkhangai and Bayankhongor increased by 5,400 to 352,600 heads compared to last year. However, the number of livestock in the provinces of Govisumber, Darkhan-Uul, Selenge, Govi-Altai, Tuv, Dornod, Bayan-Olgii, Bulgan, Khovd, Uvs, Khovsgol, Omnogovi, Dornogovi, Zavkhan, Khentii, Sukhbaatar, Arkhangai and the city of Ulaanbaatar has decreased by 14,400 to 1.0 million heads.
