Iran to build gas pipeline in Turkmenistan

AKIPRESS.COM - Iranian companies will build a new gas pipeline with a length of 125 kilometers and three gas compressor stations on the territory of Turkmenistan, which are necessary to supply additional volumes of gas to Iran.

Turkmenistan and Iran held negotiations on this project in Ashgabat on July 1-3, the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan reported.

The parties signed a contract for the purchase and sale of up to 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year, which will be supplied from Turkmenistan to Iraq through the territory of Iran under the "SWAP" scheme.

In addition to the existing capacities, it is planned to increase the volume of gas supplied to Iran along the Dovletabad – Sarahs – Hangeran routes and through the Chaloyuk gas measuring station to 40 billion cubic meters per year.

It was reported in March that gas supplies from Turkmenistan to Iraq were expected to begin under the "SWAP" scheme through Iran. Iraq had fulfilled all the requirements to begin imports of Turkmen gas by the January 2024. The delay in the start of deliveries was due to the need to agree on all conditions with Iran.

Turkmenistan has exported gas to Azerbaijan via Iran using the same scheme since 2022. However, exports were suspended in January 2024 because Ashgabat and Baku were unable to agree on gas volumes and prices.
