Uzbekistan targets 7% poverty rate by 2028

AKIPRESS.COM - Uzbekistan plans to allocate 500 billion UZS from the state budget in 2025 to support social protection programs and reduce poverty. This announcement was made during the inaugural session of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis following the parliamentary elections, attended by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Kun.uz reported.

The government has outlined ambitious goals to combat poverty, aiming to lower the poverty rate from the current 11% to 7% over the next three years. Four years ago, 23% of Uzbekistan's population lived below the poverty line. Since then, initiatives have provided income opportunities to 3.5 million citizens, significantly improving livelihoods and reducing poverty levels.

From 2025, Uzbekistan will introduce a new "Social Card" system, which will consolidate 65 types of social services and assistance, as well as nearly 50 types of benefits. This centralized system is expected to enhance the efficiency of social support programs and ensure better accessibility for beneficiaries.

The government is also preparing to expand support for citizens in vulnerable situations, particularly those who have lost income or face health challenges. To this end, a new Law on Social Insurance will be adopted, providing a robust legal framework for comprehensive social security reforms.
