U.S. announces cancellation of 83% of USAID programs

AKIPRESS.COM - "After a 6 week review we are officially cancelling 83% of the programs at USAID," Secretary of State Marc Rubio said.

"The 5200 contracts that are now cancelled spent tens of billions of dollars in ways that did not serve, (and in some cases even harmed), the core national interests of the United States," he said.

"In consultation with Congress, we intend for the remaining 18% of programs we are keeping (approximately 1000) to now be administered more effectively under the State Department," he added

Marc Rubio thanked  DOGE and hardworking staff "who worked very long hours to achieve this overdue and historic reform."

On his first day in office, US President Donald Trump froze USAID aid to foreign countries for 90 days to check whether the agency's programs correspond to "American values" and the goals of US foreign policy. From court documents it became known that the Trump administration ordered to stop 90% of payments through USAID. The USAID office was transferred under control of the U.S. Department of State.
