30 people killed in Beijing after heavy rainstorms

AKIPRESS.COM - The heavy rainstorms has left 30 people dead in Beijing as of July 29, Xinhua reports with reference to the Beijing municipal flood control headquarters.

The fatalities were reported in Beijing's northern mountainous areas. There were 28 deaths in Miyun district and two in Yanqing.

A total of 80,332 people were evacuated across the city due to flooding. The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Miyun, with 543.4 mm, according to local authorities.

Heavy rains damaged 31 sections of roads and caused power outages in 136 villages.

In recent days, extreme and severe convective weather brought by warm, moist air from the edge of the subtropical high has occurred in Beijing's Miyun District and other areas.

At 8 pm Monday, the Beijing municipal flood control headquarters activated the highest level of its citywide flood-control emergency response mechanism.
