AKIPRESS.COM - Outgoing Prime Minister of Nepal Sharma Oli has claimed that conspirators were behind the violence during last week's Kathmandu protests. He blamed them for deaths of youth during the protests.
"During the Gen Z protest, which was expected to be peaceful as claimed by the organizers, there was infiltration. Conspirators who infiltrated the protest caused violence, and we lost the lives of our youths," Nepal News quotes Oli as saying. He offered condolences to the deceased and wished for the recovery of the injured.
Oli claimed that the police was not instructed to shoot at protesters.
"The firing was done with automatic weapons not possessed by the police, and this incident must be investigated," he said.
Unrest in Nepal began on September 8. The protests were sparked by the country's blocking of social media, but protesters initially cited government corruption as the cause. The social media ban was lifted the following day, but the unrest continued. Sharma Oli resigned as Prime Minister. Former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Sushila Karki, took over as head of the interim government.
