Torrential rains in Karachi leave 17 dead and dozens injured

AKIPRESS.COM - At least 17 people were killed and 30 others injured following severe rainstorms in the Pakistani port city of Karachi on March 18.

Local authorities and rescue services reported that the heavy downpours caused significant structural failures across several districts, highlighting the vulnerability of the city's infrastructure.

In the Baldia Town neighborhood alone, 11 individuals lost their lives when a wall collapsed due to the storm, while six additional fatalities were recorded in other parts of the provincial capital.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel as high winds and flooding disrupted transportation and daily life throughout the city.

In response to the crisis, emergency teams have been deployed to clear accumulated rainwater from submerged areas.

Sindh Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah has placed the entire province, including Karachi, on high alert to manage the ongoing weather emergency and prevent further casualties.
