Tokayev calls for UN reform at Antalya Diplomacy Forum

AKIPRESS.COM - Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on April 17 took part in the penal session of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum "Mapping Tomorrow, Managing Uncertainties" in the city of Antalya, Turkey, the president's press service reported.

The president emphasized that regional conflicts are becoming global, and although the UN remains indispensable, the organization needs reform, especially the Security Council, which he described as "the key element for UN reform."

Tokayev also called for responsibility and restraint in international politics.

Regarding the situation in the Middle East, the president suggested focusing on the issue of the spread of nuclear technologies and weapons as a central topic in negotiations concerning Iran.

He also noted that despite ongoing conflicts, global trade continues to grow, but its "quality and content remain a major problem."

Tokayev referred to "middle powers," including Kazakhstan and Türkiye, as being more responsible in addressing global problems than major states represented in the UN Security Council, which he said "often block solutions to key global issues."

Moderator Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu recalled Tokayev's diplomatic experience, including his work as Deputy Secretary-General of the UN, and noted his contribution to improving the effectiveness of the international system.

The President of Kazakhstan expressed concern over the declining role of the UN stating that major negotiations are often held outside its platform. According to him, UN reform is necessary, including due to outdated provisions of the Charter, such as references to "enemy states."

North Macedonia's President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova supported Tokayev's call to focus on preventive diplomacy within the UN noting that its lack has led to the failure of peace initiatives.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze also took part in the discussion.
