AKIPRESS.COM - President Sadyr Japarov has signed amendments to the law "On burial and funeral affairs" introducing a ban on the cremation of deceased human bodies in Kyrgyzstan.  

The law was adopted by the Parliament on June 25, 2026 and aims to clarify regulations on burial procedures and the operation of crematoriums.  

Under the amendments, provisions related to the burial of urns containing ashes have been removed from the law, and existing regulations recognizing cremation as a method of human burial have been declared invalid.  

The revised law defines "cremation" as the thermal destruction of biological materials resulting from medical activities in specialized technical facilities for sanitary purposes. A crematorium is defined as a facility intended for the sanitary thermal disposal of such materials.  

The law also clarifies procedures for the burial of unidentified and unclaimed bodies, as well as aborted and stillborn human fetuses. These remains will be buried by specialized funeral services at designated cemetery sites with the consent of internal affairs authorities.  

A separate article now regulates the creation and use of crematoriums. The document states that such facilities are intended only for the thermal destruction of biological materials generated through medical activities.  

At the same time, the use of crematoriums for burning the bodies of deceased people, aborted fetuses, or stillborn human fetuses is prohibited.  

Specialized facilities may be established using funds from the national and local budgets, as well as from business entities.  

The law will come into force 10 days after its official publication. The Cabinet of Ministers has been instructed to bring existing regulations into compliance with the new legislation.
